2025 SEC Softball Tournament: Trisha Ford reacts to ‘unfortunate’ championship game cancellation
Following a delay of over 2.5 hours, the SEC declared the 2025
softball
The tournament championship would be cancelled because of the weather conditions. Originally rescheduled to begin at 1 p.m., the event had to be called off as tarps stayed covering the playing field in Athens prior to the scheduled time.

Texas A&M
.
Afterward, Aggies coach
Trisha Ford
she shared her response to the decision. She highlighted ensuring both teams could compete in a complete game as one of several “considerations” influencing the change.
The championship match was initially set for 5 PM Eastern Time on Saturday, but the league
moved it to 1 p.m.
in anticipation of weather in the area. As a result of the cancellation, OU and Texas A&M were co-tournament champions, and Ford pointed out the amount of rain at Jack Turner Stadium as a reason for the move.
“There’s just a lot of factors [that went into it],” Ford said,

It has been continuously raining since around midday today. The weather didn’t seem to provide us with a suitable gap to manage playing a match. Therefore, considering both the condition of the field and ensuring everyone could return home without safety concerns, this turned out to be one of those unavoidable situations.
The coaches from both squads spent an extended duration conversing behind home plate at Jack Turner Stadium while the rain was briefly paused; however, the precipitation resumed soon after. As a result, the league opted against playing the match. Oklahoma secures the SEC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament due to their status as regular-season champions, yet both teams will be featured when the bracket is unveiled on Sunday.
“Due to inclement weather now and predicted for the rest of the day, today’s championship game will not be played,” SEC commissioner
Greg Sankey
stated in an announcement regarding the event’s cancellation. “Both Oklahoma and Texas A&M will share the title as co-champions of the 2025 SEC softball tournament. Hats off to the Sooners and the Aggies; wishing them all the best for their upcoming playoff games!”
“Thank you to Georgia for hosting a tremendous tournament all week. Thank you to all the fans for attending the 2025 SEC softball tournament, and please arrive home safely.”
Now, the debate will be about which program will come in as the No. 1 overall seed in Sunday’s bracket reveal. Texas A&M headed into Saturday ranked as the top team in the country while Oklahoma came in at No. 2.
Both the Sooners and Aggies will find out their NCAA Tournament fate during Sunday’s selection show. The bracket reveal is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
