Why King Charles Can’t Strip Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of Their Royal Title
It has been five years since
Prince Harry
and
Meghan Markle
Stepped back from their royal responsibilities, however, they continue to hold onto their royal titles.
Even though they can no longer use the titles Her Royal Highness and His Royal Highness, which was decided in 2020, they still retain their status as
Prince and Princess of Sussex
.
The Sussex title was a personal present from Queen Elizabeth II on their wedding day, and even though the couple has sometimes criticized the royal family, there hasn’t been an attempt by the monarchy to revoke this title.

Nevertheless, some Royal fans have called for its removal.
However, King Charles cannot simply take away the title as it was a personal gift from his late mother and would require an act of Parliament to revoke it.
As stated by a royal expert, despite losing his Sussex titles, Prince Harry would continue to hold his status as a prince due to being born into the monarchy.
Ingrid Seward, Editor-in-Chief of Majesty Magazine, told The Royal Beat: “I don’t think anything will happen to the titles because, if they lose their titles, Harry is still a prince of the blood and Meghan instead of being the Duchess of Sussex, [would] be Princess Henry. That really would [confuse the Americans].
Perhaps it’s wisest simply to let it be since it appears unfriendly and unwarranted.
The expert remarked: “The (late) Queen gave them the titles, let them keep them – they’re going to be ‘H and M’ anyway.
The best approach seems to be leaving them alone, ignoring them, and allowing them to manage their own affairs—exactly as the Palace and the Royal Family are currently handling the situation.

Despite stepping back from Royal duties, Meghan discussed the significance of the Sussex name in her Netflix series ‘With Love, Meghan’, expressing its personal value.
When addressed as Meghan Markle by her friend and fellow actress Mindy Kaling, the duchess, aged 40, corrected: “It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.
“You have kids, and you go, ‘no I share my name with my children’…I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me, but it just means so much to go ‘this is our family name, our little family name’.”
Furthermore, she shared with People: “It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognised how meaningful that would be to me until we had children. I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”
