In the midst of an ongoing funding dispute with President Donald Trump, Harvard University’s president announced that he will be accepting a reduction in his salary.

On Wednesday, Harvard announced that President Alan M. Garber plans to voluntarily reduce his salary by 25% for the fiscal year 2026. This decision comes as the institution persists in opposing the Trump administration’s move to freeze grants and public funding.

Although Garber’s compensation for the 2025 fiscal year hasn’t been disclosed, historical data shows that Harvard presidents typically earn more than $1 million each year. This suggests that a 25% decrease in his salary could result in a reduction of over six figures, according to The Crimson.


The Trump administration reduced funding by an additional $450 million.

in grants to Harvard University on Tuesday after the Ivy League school pushed back against government allegations that it’s a hotbed of liberalism and antisemitism.

In a letter to Harvard on Tuesday, a federal antisemitism task force said Harvard will lose grants from eight federal agencies in addition to $2.2 billion that was previously frozen by the Trump administration.

The administration has likewise threatened to revoke the university’s tax-exempt status.

Harvard has filed a lawsuit, saying the Trump administration unlawfully froze the money.

Earlier in May,

Over 80 Harvard faculty members made pledges

To contribute 10% of their salary for up to a year to assist the university in its legal battle against Trump.

In the pledge, the collective of professors stated, among other things, “We are encouraged by the university’s refusal to comply with the Trump administration’s illegal requests. Additionally, we acknowledge that the institution now confronts significant fiscal harm as a result of standing up for educational independence.”

Eighty-four professors joined, with some agreeing to be named publicly.
