Cryptococcus neoformans

Cryptococcus neoformans is a type of fungal disease caused by breathing in spores from a fungus found in the environment, according to the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

More often than not, it is harmless to healthy individuals, but it can pose a serious threat to people with weakened immune systems, particularly those with advanced HIV/AIDS. In cases such as these, the fungus can cause cryptococcosis, a potentially fatal infection.

How do humans get Cryptococcus?

The 2015

National Library of Medicine publication notes that

people typically contract cryptococcus by inhaling airborne fungal spores.

Once inside the body, the fungi can spread to a person’s lungs or brain, leading to cryptococcal meningitis, prompting fungal infection around the brain and spinal cord. Typical symptoms include headaches, neck stiffness, confusion and light sensitivity.

How long can someone live with AIDS?

As the most advanced stage of HIV infection, AIDs significantly impacts a person’s immune system and life expectancy, which depends on several factors, according to the

National Institutes of Health’s HIV overview

.

The variables impacting the lifespan of a person with AIDS include treatment and how early medical management begins.

Without treatment, the life expectancy for a person who has developed AIDS is up to 3 years, with that time being even shorter depending on other health factors such as infections or cancers. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment of HIV can be managed and may keep a person’s condition from ever progressing to AIDS.
