Bruce Willis’ wife
Emma Heming Willis
recalls having ‘no hope’ after the actor’s dementia diagnosis.
In March 2022, Bruce’s family released a statement announcing that he had been diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that affects the ability to speak. About a year later, the diagnosis was updated to f
rontotemporal dementia
(FTD), a brain disorder that can cause changes in cognition, language, and behavior.

Emma and Bruce met in 2007 and have been married since 2009. They share two daughters, 13-year-old Mabel and 11-year-old Evelyn. Emma is also stepmother to Bruce’s three daughters with his ex-wife, Demi Moore. The movie stars have maintained a close friendship and co-parenting relationship since their split over 25 years ago.
Emma recalled feeling like she didn’t have enough information at first and having to do her own research about FTD. “We received a diagnosis and [were] sent away with no hope, no guidance, no nothing, and I really had to figure out how to put resources into place,” she told People.
“And it was a lot of searching the Internet, trying to figure things out.”
She immediately went on a deep dive about the disease and sought experts who could provide her with as much information and guidance as possible. “I think that was my downfall. I thought that that’s what I was supposed to do,” she said.
As her husband’s caregiver, she eventually realized she needed to make sure she was okay first so that she could be there for him and their family.
“What I’ve learned in all of this is that the most important person is the caregiver. We have to care for the caregiver, because when we care for ourselves, we can then show up for the person that we love.”
The mother-of-two added, “because the ecosystem of care doesn’t work unless the caregiver is cared for.”
Her book, ‘The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,’ which details her experience as her husband’s caregiver and provides guidance for others who are navigating a loved one’s dementia, is set to be released in September 2025.
