Ex-Seattle Mariners Prospect Now World Series Champion Cut, Might Team Revive Old Ties?
The Los Angeles Dodgers designated veteran utility man Chris Taylor for assignment on Sunday in the midst of a tough season.
Taylor, who is 34 years old, has been batting just .200 over 35 at-bats. He has participated in only 28 games and has managed to record two RBIs so far. While Taylor could theoretically be traded, he stands a good chance of passing through waivers unclaimed. This would enable another team to sign him for the bare-minimum salary under free agency rules.
In 2012, Taylor was initially selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fifth round from the University of Virginia. By 2014, he had climbed up to become the No. 7 ranked prospect within their system and debuted with the team that same year, spending portions of three seasons with them. However, after being dealt to the Dodgers in 2016—a move later seen as one of Jerry Dipoto’s biggest missteps during his tenure as a Mariners executive—his time with the Seattle Mariners came to an end.
Over portions of 10 seasons with the Dodgers, Taylor emerged as a versatile player, maintaining a batting average of around .250 along with 108 home runs. His contributions were instrumental in leading the Dodgers to the World Series in 2017, 2020, and 2024, where they clinched championships in the final two appearances.
He even hit a career-high 21 homers in 2017.
Could the M’s consider bringing him back due to injury worries within their own lineup?
It seems improbable for several reasons. Firstly, Taylor has not been having a strong season. Secondly, the Mariners already possess versatile infield options with Miles Mastrobuoni, Leo Rivas, and Donovan Solano. Should Seattle consider trading any of these players, they might as well promote top prospect Cole Young from Triple-A, where he’s performing exceptionally well and close to earning his call-up.

will have another game against the White Sox on Tuesday afternoon at 4:40 PM PT.
