Mamma Mia producer says Sabrina Carpenter would ‘be a goddess’ in third film
Mamma Mia! producer Judy Craymer recently told Deadline that she would be open to casting
pop star Sabrina Carpenter
in the franchise’s third installment.
Mamma Mia! is a romantic comedy jukebox
musical
based on the songs of
Swedish pop group ABBA
that follows Sophie as she attempts to figure out who her biological father is by inviting three of her mother’s past lovers to her wedding.
The first Mamma Mia! was released in 2008 and was the
most successful Broadway film adaptation until Wicked
. The movie starred Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Stellan Skarsgård, and Julie Walters. The sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, came out in 2018.

A third installment is currently in development, with a script confirmed to be written, though Judy told Deadline, “I’m not going there,” when asked for more details about the movie.
She did, however, express interest in casting the 26-year-old Espresso singer. “She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep,” she told the outlet after mentioning that pop fans and artists are “all influenced by” ABBA.
“It’ll happen when it happens,” she said.
“We know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen. And I mean, we brought together this amazing group of movie stars that were all connected through it, and huge friendships evolved.”
She also hinted at Meryl’s return as Donna despite her character being dead in the sequel. “Yeah, [Streep] said our after-shooting dinners were legendary,” the 67-year-old producer said.
Amanda Seyfried, who plays the lead in the film, said that she would be interested in Sabrina playing her daughter, even though she’s only 13 years older than her.
“Yeah — technically, she could,” the actress told ABC News in an October 2024 interview.
“You’re right. Actually, doesn’t matter. You’re right. You know what? Old age makeup for me. I don’t mind. I’m an actor, I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine. I’m a big fan,” Amanda said.
Before becoming a Grammy-winning artist, the Please Please Please singer began her career as an actor, with her first role in 2011 on the NBC drama series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She then starred in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World from 2014-2017.
