This HGTV Star’s DRAMATIC Falling Out With Her Mom Still Has Us Perplexed
Nearly a decade ago,
HGTV fans
were introduced to
Mina Starsiak Hawk
and her mom Karen E. Laine on the show
Good Bones
. In the series, which ran for eight seasons, the renovation team flipped houses in their hometown of Indianapolis. But in the years since, they haven’t been on great terms.
So, what happened between the
mother-daughter duo
? We’re breaking down everything to know about their work history—and rift—below.
2007: Starsiak Hawk and Laine Start Flipping Homes
Starsiak Hawk and Laine started flipping homes in 2007 when Starsiak Hawk bought a house post-college, and the pair took it upon themselves to fix it up. During the process, they discovered their shared passion for home renovation. Equipped with Starsiak Hawk’s real estate expertise and Laine’s legal knowledge, they cofounded the company
Two Chicks and a Hammer
, under which they flipped houses in the Indianapolis area.
2016:
Good Bones
Premieres
Two Chicks and a Hammer was discovered by High Noon Entertainment in 2014, and Starsiak Hawk and Laine filmed a TV pilot with them. The pilot aired in May 2015 under the title
Two Chicks and a Hammer
. By July 2015, the pair started filming the first season of what became known as
Good Bones.
2019: Laine Retires From Two Chicks and a Hammer
After filming a handful of
Good Bones
seasons, Laine decided to
retire from Two Chicks and a Hammer
. She remained part of the HGTV series, shifting her focus from home renovations to DIY projects instead. In an
announcement on Instagram
, the company shared that she was also excited “to spend her time doing all the things she loves like spending more time with Roger, sailing, [and] hanging with her chickens.”
Starsiak Hawk addressed Laine’s exit on her personal Instagram account, too. “I can’t say thanks to mom enough for her help in creating Two Chicks and a Hammer,” Starsiak Hawk wrote in September 2019. “I can say, without a doubt, it wouldn’t have been possible without her and not nearly as fun. Although she is taking a step back from the day to day operations, a piece of her will always live on with this company as we carry on with our mission of ‘revitalizing Indianapolis one property at a time.’”
2023: Starsiak Hawk Opens Up About Relationship With Laine and Family
A few months prior to the season eight finale of
Good Bones
, Starsiak Hawk revealed that she wasn’t on good terms with her mom and brothers. During an episode of her podcast
Mina AF
, released in August 2023, Starsiak Hawk detailed her
complicated relationship with her family
. She said, “My mom and I aren’t in a great place. My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I are kind of like in a nonexistent place. It’s complicated without even being complicated. We don’t really engage much, and the last engagement wasn’t super positive, and that was maybe a year ago.”
She went on to explain that they all see each other at holiday parties and on family vacations, mainly because it’s important to a handful of people—mainly her dad. She noted it’s likely no one was happy with simply playing nice. “I do know, if we all keep doing the same thing, it’s going to keep being the same,” she said. “And I don’t think any of us are happy with it being the same.”
In the following months, Starsiak Hawk began sharing even more with her podcast listeners. In one episode, she cited that she and her mom had issues before the show. They were able to overcome them, although she didn’t get into specifics. She also clarified that their relationship hasn’t always been this way. There was a long period of her life, from college to starting their joint business venture, when they got along smoothly.
“It was maybe eight years of my now 39 years that we were extremely close,” Starsiak Hawk said in 2023. “It’s very challenging when you aren’t working from a super stable base, to then throw in TV, which will just completely f— your world up if you let it. And it’s really, really hard for people not to let it.”
Filming the HGTV series—and especially the last season—proved difficult. After her mom retired from the business in 2019, she felt the added pressure as the sole owner of the business. She took on most of the financial burden, which affected her mood on the set of
Good Bones
. “I, as one single human, carry the weight of everything you see on TV,” she said at the time. “And not in a toot-my-own-horn way, but like this is why I’m so damn cranky all the time, you guys. Because I can’t be the one having fun.”
2024: Starsiak Hawk and Laine Return for a Special Spinoff
In 2024, Starsiak Hawk and Laine returned to HGTV for a
limited season of
Good Bones
—we’re talking
very
limited, as in three episodes. But their stories largely played out separately. The 90-minute premiere episode centered on Starsiak Hawk’s journey of buying and renovating her family’s lake house. The other two hour-long episodes focused on Laine as she renovated her 120-year-old bungalow in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Where Do Starsiak Hawk and Laine Stand Today?
As of late, neither Starsiak Hawk or Laine has spoken publicly about their relationship. While they aren’t in each other’s social media posts or comments sections, they do still follow each other on Instagram.
Recently, Laine announced she’s returning to her legal roots. “Followers are used to seeing my crafting and home improvement content, which I will continue to post, but there will be some changes because I am excited to be joining Josiah Swinney to restart my criminal defense practice,” she
announced on Instagram
.
She went on to explain the similarities she sees between law and home renovation. “I meet people charged with a crime or a run down house on their worst day,” she wrote. “It is my job to understand what went wrong, and then use my skills to turn the story in a new direction.”
Starsiak Hawk recently
appeared as a judge
on
Rock the Block
season six
and has been spending time with her extended family. “Good people, good vibes, good fun, good times with family including the first of what I’m sure will be many cousin movie nights, complete with fresh baked cookies,” she
captioned
a collection of photos on May 28.
