If approved by voters, Missouri’s nearly total abortion prohibition might be reinstated following the recent passage of a new ballot initiative by the state legislature.

The Republican-led Missouri Senate approved a proposed constitutional amendment on Thursday. This new amendment aims to overturn a previous one enacted by voters last year that had established

abortion protections

In the state’s constitution, Democrats attempted to filibuster the measure on Wednesday. However,Republicans employed parliamentary procedures to bypass this obstruction, as reported by The Associated Press.

The suggested amendment, approved by Missouri’s Republican-led House last month, will appear on the state’s ballot during the 2026 general election.

Nevertheless, the amendment might be brought up for an earlier vote if Missouri’s Republican governor decides to convene a special election addressing this matter.

ANTI-ABORTION PROVISIONS IN TRUMP’S ‘HUGE, GORGEOUS LEGISLATION’ MIGHT CAUSE A REVOLT AMONG REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS IN THE HOUSE

“Republican senators in the Missouri Legislature are attempting to override the electorate’s decision by advocating for a reinstatement of the abortion ban in the state. This proposed measure would prohibit abortions and revoke rights that were recently granted to voters half a year ago,” as stated by the Missouri Senate Democrats’ X account.

After the

U.S. Supreme Court

In 2022, following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, several Republican-led states activated pre-existing trigger laws that swiftly led to more stringent abortion restrictions at the state level. Missouri was quick off the mark as one of these states, being amongst the first to implement an abortion prohibition after the landmark decision was overturned.

Missouri’s trigger law made all abortions in the state illegal, except during circumstances when the life of the mother is at risk.

But, in 2024, a citizen-initiated constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion protections into the state’s constitution ultimately repealed Missouri’s trigger law. The ballot measure, known as Amendment 3, was voted on in November and passed, but by a very narrow margin.

Missouri Republicans sought to include messaging in the ballot amendment that explicitly says it will repeal Amendment 3, but it did not pass, according to the
