India is entering a new era in Test cricket, and the person charged with guiding this transformation, Ajit Agarkar, did not mince words at Saturday’s press conference. Following the unveiling of India’s roster for the five-Test series against England, the selection committee chair conveyed several candid remarks providing clarity on the team’s changing dynamics, choices, and exclusions.

One of the major talking points was Jasprit Bumrah’s workload. While the spearhead will lead the pace attack in England, Agarkar admitted the management isn’t looking to overuse him.

I believe he won’t be able to participate in all five Tests, according to what we’ve been informed by the physio and medical team,” Agarkar stated. “Even if he can only play in three or four of them, he could still secure victory in several Test matches for us. We’re pleased that he’s included in our squad.

With a packed schedule and the World Test Championship cycle just beginning, careful handling of Bumrah who has had an injury-troubled past will be crucial. Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Shardul Thakur form the rest of the seam attack.

The squad marks a stark new phase, especially after the Test retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

It’s always challenging to bring in new players for positions they held,” Agarkar stated. “They are pillars of our sport. In early April, Virat contacted me expressing that he believed he had given his all. One must honor this sentiment—he has competed in 123 Test matches and tallied 30 centuries. The same goes for Rohit and Ashwin. Their absence will be deeply felt.

Due to Rohit’s retirement leaving a gap in leadership, Shubman Gill has been named captain for the England series. Rishabh Pant, returning strongly, will serve as vice-captain.

“It’s a big transition, but we are confident Gill is the guy to take us forward,” Agarkar said. “It’s a new WTC cycle. We need to move on while showing respect to those who’ve stepped away.”

Regarding the unexpected selection of Karun Nair, who last participated in a Test match in 2017, instead of Sarfaraz Khan, Agarkar provided a thoughtful clarification.

Who’s that IPL player?

“Karun has scored heaps in domestic cricket, played county, and brings experience,” he said. “Sarfaraz got a hundred but didn’t get runs after that. Sometimes it’s just a decision the team management takes.”

He mentioned that without Kohli being part of the lineup, having experienced players in the middle order became crucial.

With Mohammed Shami still recovering, Arshdeep Singh has received his maiden Test call-up, backed by red-ball form and a county stint.

“He’s a quality bowler, has the height and swing, and plays domestic when he can,” Agarkar noted. “With Bumrah unlikely to play all five, we wanted variety.”

There was no place for Shreyas Iyer, despite his strong domestic and ODI performances.

“Currently, there isn’t any space in the Test setup for him,” Agarkar confirmed.

The rising left-handed batsman, Sai Sudharsan, was also granted a spot in the Test team, and Agarkar stated that this selection wasn’t solely based on their performance in the IPL.

We have been monitoring him for some time now. He possesses both the attitude and skill suited for red-ball cricket.

India’s team lineup for the England Test series:
