PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A new apartment complex aimed at helping medically vulnerable adults is coming to Providence.

The 35 studio and one-bedroom apartments will be located on Pine Street and operated by

Crossroads Rhode Island

. The facility will also feature a healing garden and space for health and behavioral health providers.

“We know that without a safe place to live, it’s nearly impossible for someone to get healthy and stay healthy,” Crossroads RI President and CEO Michelle Wilcox said Monday.

“These apartments are about more than just housing—they’re about giving people the stability they need to heal, feel safe, and start fresh,” Wilcox continued. “This is a big step forward for our community in recognizing that maintaining stable housing and addressing one’s health are interdependent to one’s ability to survive and thrive.”

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, individuals experiencing homelessness are three to six times more likely to suffer severe and chronic health conditions.

In many cases, after receiving treatment, a patient may be considered healthy enough to be discharged with home care support, but since they can’t be discharged into homelessness, they end up staying in an expensive hospital bed.

These apartments will provide them with a safe place to stay and continue their recovery, according to Crossroads.

Sen. Jack Reed said making this happen was a combined federal, state, local and personal effort, which Wilcox reiterated.

“It really took the whole community to bring the funding together, and then there’s all the work that actually goes into it,” she said.

The housing complex is expected to be built by the end of 2026.
