Harvard Unveils $250M Fund to Counteract Trump’s Grant Freeze
(Big One News) – Harvard University has committed $250 million from its endowment to aid researchers following the freeze imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration on approximately $3 billion worth of federal grants and contracts over the past few weeks, as stated by the institution on Wednesday.
The elite Ivy League university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is one of Trump’s most prominent targets. The Republican president has been making an extraordinary effort to revamp private colleges and schools across the U.S. that he says foster anti-American, Marxist and “radical left” ideologies. He has criticized Harvard in particular for hiring prominent Democrats to teaching or leadership positions.
Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration due to their choice to terminate grant funding for the institution’s research projects, primarily within the field of medical science. The university argues that this action constitutes an unlawful effort to restrict both academic independence and free expression.
Last month, the government made the announcement regarding the cuts shortly following Dr. Alan Garber, President of Harvard, criticizing an extensive set of requirements from the Trump administration aimed at restructuring the university’s governance, education methods, and admission policies. Additionally, these conditions included auditing both students’ and faculty members’ perspectives.
Garber, alongside Provost John Manning in a shared announcement, stated that the Trump administration was “halting crucial scientific studies” and described it as an “incredibly difficult period” for the nation’s most ancient and richest educational institution.
On Wednesday, Harvard stated that Garber would be voluntarily accepting a temporary salary reduction of 25%, effective from July onward. Earlier, the institution had declared a hiring freeze.
The statement said Harvard “cannot absorb the entire cost” of the frozen grants, which the Trump administration says are worth more than $2.6 billion. The school said it was working with researchers to help them find alternative funding.
“The impact of such steps on the nation’s scientific research enterprise could be severe and lasting,” the statement said.
The Trump administration has charged Harvard with persistently considering race during the review process for student admissions and permitting discrimination against Jewish individuals due to the influence of the pro-Palestinian student activist movement that caused unrest on U.S. college campuses last year.
Harvard maintains that its admission policies adhere to both federal laws and judicial decisions. The institution also remains committed to fighting against antisemitism and various forms of bias across its campus grounds.
A federal judge based in Boston has ordered the government to submit its response to Harvard’s lawsuit by June 9 and has set a court date for July 21.
