John Legend: Politics Played a Role in Ending His Friendship With Kanye West
John Legend mentioned in an interview with The Times published on Saturday that the bond between him and Kanye West weakened partly because of their differing political views. He stated, “I had no clue about the things he’s obsessed with now—antisemitism, anti-black sentiments—and it’s disheartening to witness this transformation,” referring to his erstwhile colleague.
While the singer believes that the death of West’s mother might have something to do with the dramatic changes that he’s undergone, he also told the outlet, “I don’t think we’re qualified to psychoanalyze him.”
Legend encountered West when he was functioning as a management consultant from 1999 to 2002. After signing the artist to his label, Legend became involved with the buzz surrounding the release of West’s album “The College Dropout” in 2004. This exposure provided Legend chances he wouldn’t have had elsewhere, quickly drawing significant interest from the music industry.
In another part of the interview, Legend discussed his personal political inspirations. When he was 15 years old, he participated in a national essay contest with the theme “How Do You Intend to Create Black History?” Around this period, he was also disconnected from his mother due to her struggles with addiction.
Although you wouldn’t want such experiences for any child, these hurdles definitely build your resilience,” Legend stated. “They instill a feeling of self-reliance, and you learn at an early age that when confronted with hardship, you’ll find a way to overcome it.
