The New York Mets pulled off the largest deal of the winter transfer period by signing Juan Soto. Nevertheless, according to a new report, he was initially reluctant to become part of the Mets team.

In 2024, Soto played for the New York Yankees. His performance was instrumental as they advanced to the World Series. Despite this success, his tenure in the Bronx lasted only one year. Although the Yankees attempted to retain him, offering what was reported to be a 16-year, $760 million contract.

“It was a difficult choice. (The Yankees) were atop the standings… but we couldn’t make it happen,” Soto shared with Heyman. “Still, everything works out for a reason. I have faith in our decisions. We’ll just have to wait and see what comes next.”

Michael Kay confirms

Soto expressed his desire to join the Yankees; however, financial incentives were not what led him to sign with the Mets. His decision stemmed from personal reasons related to his family. This revelation followed reports from insiders within the Mets’ locker room who portrayed Soto as appearing downcast.

“The crux of the matter is this: I’ll state it plainly, even though it will undoubtedly be dismissed. Naturally, it must be refuted,” Kay explained. “However, I’ve spoken with individuals whose opinions I value. He expressed a desire to go back to the Yankees; that was what he truly wanted. Yet, his family insisted, ‘You’re joining the Mets.’ They were quite at ease with both Alex and Steve Cohen. Consequently, they concluded, ‘You’re playing for the Mets.’ This individual tends to heed his family’s advice.”

Despite this, Soto secured a 15-year, $765 million contract, making him somewhat content with the situation. Nonetheless, wealth has its limits. Soto confessed that he had hoped to go back to the Yankees, indicating that rumors suggesting his discontent in Queens were not unfounded.
