Kansas Leaders Opt Not to Extend STAR Bond Program
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland is heading up talks with the Chiefs and the Royals as these two franchises are working to determine their venues for the year 2031.
The leases they currently hold at the Truman Sports Complex will end in January of that year.
The Kansas House Speaker and Wichita Republican Dan Hawkins mentioned that he occasionally discusses matters with the teams, who are also engaging in conversations with the Kansas Department of Commerce.
Hawkins said on Friday that he thinks the teams are close to some sort of proposal that the department would bring to people like him. He also said they don’t plan on at least at this time, extending the Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) Bond package that ends June 30 of this year.
With that in mind, FOX4 asked him if he thought the teams would make their stadium decisions in about a month.
“Well, I’m not entirely convinced about that,” Hawkins stated.
“Actually, I think we’ve made a very good proposal, and I think that they know we’ve made a good proposal, and certainly, Missouri hasn’t done anything.”
Missouri’s Governor, Republican Mike Kehoe, intends to reconvene the state legislature in Jefferson City during June due to an impasse over a stadium bill; specifically concerning arrangements related to the Chiefs and the Royals sports teams, as the State Senate did not manage to approve the necessary legislation earlier in May.
Hawkins appeared on FOX4 last Friday as a feature for the upcoming May 25th episode of 4 The People. Viewers can watch the complete discussion when FOX4 uploads it to their website sometime after the initial broadcast.
