Liam Coen’s Strategy: Balancing the Jaguars’ Offensive and Defensive Scales
Jacksonville Jaguars
head coach
Liam Coen
is in a much different state of mind this offseason.
Following many years of solely concentrating
on the offense
With the Los Angeles Rams, Kentucky Wildcats, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Coen is currently getting accustomed to celebrating his team’s defensive successes as their head coach.
In the initial phase of the offseason program and during the first OTA practice on Monday, it seemed like the defense was adapting more rapidly on the practice field compared to the offense.
However, as Coen pointed out, this is anticipated to be how things stand.
“I think always, the defense is typically always ahead. It’s a little bit more of a go, line up, reactionary kind of phase, if you will. I’m not diminishing what they have to learn defensively. There are a lot of calls, a lot of different fundamentals, communication that has to occur,” Coen said after the first OTAs practice.
“I think, naturally, you would say that offensively there’s a lot more that ends up maybe slowing you down pre-snap and post-snap. But I would hope that the defense would be a little further ahead, to be honest with you. I think that’s typically the case as you go all the way through training camp and as you go into the season.”
Like Coen would observe, this stage is still quite preliminary for the whole squad. He doesn’t anticipate the attack to resemble unstoppable forces at present, nor does he expect the group to be functioning seamlessly and operating at full capacity just yet.
“We’re striving for improvement. We still have a long way to go. Our focus now is preparing for the games in September, clearly. Currently, our main objective is determining how much we can genuinely absorb each day. We aren’t assessing certain aspects that might typically be considered during a match or throughout the season, correct? Like counting the number of mental mistakes,” stated Coen.
However, that is precisely the purpose of the offseason program. When a team is acquiring new strategies for both offense and defense, they will inevitably experience periods of learning and face challenges as they progress toward full development.
The Jaguars have welcomed their youthful players, and they are not hesitating to do so during the initial phase of the offseason.
“How disciplined can we remain regarding our communication, formations, alignments, and assignments? Can we expect to execute every play perfectly from the very first day of Phase 3? I doubt it,” Coen stated.
However, regarding the operations and communications, are we grasping what needs to be achieved through these calls? This is an exploratory stage rather than a competitive one. Would you prefer clarity? Definitely. Is perfection desired? Of course, we all aim for that. But realistically, achieving it isn’t our current situation at this stage.
