ORLANDO, Fla. (Big One NewsNewswire) — Colorectal cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent type of cancer in the U.S., and it stands as the second major contributor to cancer-related deaths. However, there are several steps you can adopt to reduce your risk of contracting this frequently lethal disease.

Approximately one out of every 24 individuals will develop colorectal cancer during their lifetime. Most of the time, however, your genetics are not at fault.

“Only about two to three percent of patients with colon cancers have hereditary disease,” said Ajay Goel, PhD, professor of molecular diagnostics and experimental therapeutics at City of Hope.

What steps can you take to reduce your risk? Start by consuming a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

The latest findings indicate that increasing your calcium consumption might be beneficial as well. Studies have shown that consuming an additional 300 milligrams of calcium daily—approximately equivalent to drinking a glass of milk—is linked to a 17% reduced likelihood of developing colorectal cancer. Additionally, make sure to undergo routine examinations. Major health groups recommend beginning these checks at age 45; however, this advice isn’t always followed by everybody.

“Many individuals do not adhere to the recommendations due to various factors; some cannot afford a colonoscopy, while others are scared of undergoing the procedure,” stated Professor Goel.

Not only do colonoscopies detect cancer, but they also enable physicians to extract precancerous growths, thereby averting potential cancers down the line. Additionally—quit smoking and avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Researchers found that consuming an extra 20 grams of alcohol each day correlates with a 15% increased likelihood of developing colorectal cancer. This quantity is roughly equivalent to what you’d find in a big glass of wine.

“Most of the time, we find these cancers not early enough and by the time we first diagnoses them, it’s too late,” stated Prof. Goel.

It’s never too early to begin.

The number of deaths related to colorectal cancer has consistently declined since the middle of the 1980s. According to experts, this trend can be attributed to increased screenings and modifications in lifestyle choices.
