South Dakota Department of Health confirms first measles case in 2025
The South Dakota Department of Health has confirmed the first case of measles in the state for 2025 in a Meade County resident, according to a press release.
The SDDOH said a Meade County adult developed the disease after international travel.

Community members may have been exposed to measles if they were at the following locations at the listed times. If so, SDDOH asks that you monitor for measles symptoms for 21 days.
- The Rapid City Medical Center urgent care waiting room (2820 Mt Rushmore Road, Rapid City, South Dakota) on May 28 from 7:15- 10 a.m. MT
- The Monument Health Sturgis urgent care waiting room (2140 Junction Ave., Sturgis, South Dakota) on May 29 from 9:45 a.m.-3 p.m. MT
Symptoms of measles include a runny nose, cough, fever, a rash and red, watery eyes.
This is the state’s first measles case since a case that occurred in Rapid City in July 2024. Prior to that, the state had not seen a confirmed case in nine years.
