Locating quality starting pitchers often turns into a recurring challenge. This season, my objective is to address this issue by identifying top-tier pitchers each week who are widely available on most waiver wires. I plan to utilize these strategies to do so.

To start, let’s examine

last week’s picks

:

  • Ryan Pepiot

    (vs. HOU): 6.0 Innings Pitched, 4 strikeouts, 3 earned runs, 8 hits allowed, 1 walk (no decision)

  • Mitchell Parker

    (vs. ATL): 5.1 Innings, 4 Strikeouts, 3 Earned Runs, 6 Hits, 1 Walk (Win)

  • Logan Evans

    (vs. CWS): 6.0 Innings Pitched, 7 strikeouts, 4 earned runs, 6 hits allowed, 1 walk (no decision)

  • Clarke Schmidt

    (@COL): 4.2 Innings Pitched, 8 strikeouts, 3 earned runs, 6 hits allowed, 2 walks (Result: Loss)

Total: 22 Innings, 23 Strikeouts, 13 Earned Runs, 26 Hits, 5 Walks (1-1)

This week accomplished the highest strikeout percentage we have seen all year. However, the ERA and WHIP among these starters were not great. We targeted strikeouts last week, and we got them. For this upcoming week, I plan to gather a more balanced lineup of starters with less strikeout emphasis.

Without further delay, below are my picks for pitchers to stream during Week 9, from Monday, May 26, to Sunday, June 1.

Fantasy Baseball Streaming Pitchers

Monday, May 26

Michael Lorenzen (SP – KC)

vs. CINC | 10% Rostered

Michael Lorenzen falls into an awkward role as a pitcher who is too good to be waiver wire fodder, but not quite good enough to make the rotation of most fantasy teams. He should be streamed when he has easy matchups and avoided when he has matchups that look tough. Lorenzen faces the Reds, who are just below .500 at the time of writing. The Reds have been very mediocre, especially in hitting stats. The offense has 457 strikeouts, the fourth most in baseball. I trust Lorenzen to put together a solid start against Cincinnati.

Alternative:

Ryan Yarbrough (SP – NYY)

@LAA | 1% Rostered

Tuesday, May 27

Tomoyuki Sugano (SP – BAL)

vs. STL | 26% Rostered

Tomoyuki Sugano appears in roughly one-fourth of fantasy baseball leagues, making him likely unowned and available as a streaming option. Should Sugano still be free, he presents an excellent choice when facing the Cardinals. While his strikeout rate isn’t impressive at just 4.9 per nine innings, he compensates with stellar control and consistency, boasting a commendable 3.07 ERA alongside a tidy 1.02 WHIP. This week, Sugano can be considered a dependable yet unspectacular starting pitcher.

Alternative:

Chris Paddack (Pitcher – Minnesota)

@TB | 11% Rostered

Wednesday, May 28

Clarke Schmidt (SP – New York Yankees)

@LAA | 20% Rostered

Clarke Schmidt versus the Angels represents an ideal pairing. Schmidt’s popularity among teams claiming him from waivers is well-deserved. Following a challenging beginning and middle part of the season, he has demonstrated a commendable 3.64 ERA over his last five outings, securing three quality starts within this period. Additionally, in scoring systems that track victories, Schmidt presents significant winning chances due to his position in the Yankees’ pitching lineup. Consider acquiring Clarke Schmidt promptly.

Alternative:

Noah Cameron (DNP – KC)

vs. CIN | 8% Rostered

Thursday, May 29

Jeffrey Springs (SP – ATH)

@TOR | 14% Rostered

Only four MLB games are being played on Thursday, and Jeffrey Springs,

Ryan Gusto

, and

Emerson Hancock

are the

only

Starter options available through waivers could prove fruitful. Automatically, Springs facing the Blue Jays presents the strongest pick. Despite potential increased interest from other streaming players for this matchup, Springs remains an enticing selection. Following his last two stellar outings where he conceded just one run each against both the Giants and Dodgers over 13.2 innings pitched, recording nine strikeouts but permitting only eight hits and two walks, Springs appears promising as well when up against Toronto.

Alternative:

Emerson Hancock (SP – SEA)

vs. WSH | 1% Rostered

Friday, May 30

David Peterson (SP – NYM)

vs. COL | 18% Rostered

David Peterson against the Rockies could be the top choice for streaming this week. The highlight here is that the Mets will be playing at home, which means Peterson won’t face the challenges posed by Coors Field’s high altitude. Additionally, Peterson shouldn’t struggle much against such an underperforming team as the Rockies. It wouldn’t serve any purpose to detail their poor performance this season. With a solid 2.86 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP, Peterson faces one of the weakest teams in Major League Baseball. Should he still be available on waivers, picking up Peterson for your lineup is practically a must.

Alternative:

Jose Soriano (RP – LAA)

@CLE | 12% Rostered

Saturday, May 31

Ben Brown (SP – CHC)

vs. CIN | 10% Rostered

Ben Brown is our strikeout pitcher of the week. The starter’s 11.3 K/9 ratio is elite. If Brown’s 5.44 ERA and 1.55 WHIP were as good as his strikeouts, he would be one of the best pitchers in the world. Sadly, we live in the real world, where Brown is a risky stream for pitching ratios. If you are comfortable risking your ratios, Brown is a wonderful source of strikeouts, especially because he plays the Reds, who strike out the fourth-most in baseball.

Alternative:

Davis Martin (SP – CWS)

@BAL | 2% Rostered

Sunday, June 1

Ryan Weathers (Pitcher for Miami)

vs. San Francisco | 10% Rostered

Ryan Weathers is now back to full health. This frequently injured 25-year-old pitcher presents an intriguing option as a streaming choice when facing the Giants and looks like a promising addition for deep league rosters over the longer term. Last year, in an 86.2-inning stint with the Marlins, Weathers performed commendably, recording a 3.63 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP—the finest campaign of his young career so far. Having evolved into a reliable starting pitcher, Weathers displayed his prowess early this season during consecutive outings against the Cubs. Even though these were challenging matchups, he conceded just two runs through those games, racking up nine strikeouts within ten frames pitched. Should Weathers continue performing at this level against tough opponents such as the Cubs, he could very likely replicate success against the formidable lineup of the San Francisco Giants.

Alternative:

Tomoyuki Sugano (SP – BAL)

vs. CWS | 26% Rostered
