Vice President J.D. Vance conveyed a unifying statement during the U.S. Naval Academy’s commencement ceremony on Friday, highlighting that President Donald Trump’s administration supports and takes pride in each individual graduate, regardless of differing political views.

A former U.S. Marine Corps member spoke to the Naval Academy Class of 2025 about the significant duties they will assume as they serve their country. He shared his heartfelt sense of honor in recognizing these future leaders.

“I’d like to tell everyone here that I’ve served as vice president for roughly 120 days, and this summer I’ll be turning 41,” Vance said. “Yet, during these 41 years, I have never felt prouder than I do today in honoring you, celebrating you, and congratulating you on your excellent work.”

Acknowledging the diverse perspectives likely present among the graduates, Vance underscored a shared national sentiment. “Now I’m sure some of you share my politics and some of you don’t. But I know today, I speak for a grateful nation when I say we are rooting for you, Naval Academy Class of 2025, we are proud of you and we depend on you. Congratulations, God speed, and do great work.”

The Vice President referenced the heritage of John Paul Jones, frequently referred to as the “Father of the Navy,” implying that his lasting legacy is being handed over to the new cohort of naval officers entering service.

“Their example endures within each one of you. Their bravery reminds us that your duty is to be steadfast yet prudent, to pursue peace without sacrificing freedom,” Vance stated. “And to remain unwavering in your beliefs despite the steep price.”

In addition to discussing the graduation ceremony, Vance also addressed recent foreign policy changes. He highlighted that President Trump’s trip to the Middle East the prior week initiated “a generational transformation in international relations” focused on promoting world stability. After his journey, President Trump suspended certain Syria-related sanctions temporarily and showed hope for reaching an agreement over Iran’s nuclear program. These actions received recognition from both sides of the political aisle as successful diplomatic achievements.
