As India prepares for a crucial five-Test series against England this summer, delving deeper into the recently unveiled squad uncovers an intriguing subtext related to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Gujarat Titans emerge as the most prominently featured IPL franchise within the 18-player roster, boasting five representatives among the selected athletes.

GT Captain Shubman Gill will take over as the leader of the Indian Test team for the first time due to the unavailability of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Joining him from his franchise are teammates Sai Sudharsan, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Prasidh Krishna.

The Delhi Capitals (DC) have selected three players: KL Rahul, Karun Nair, and Kuldeep Yadav. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) similarly feature three members: Rishabh Pant (who serves as vice-captain and wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, and Akash Deep.

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) include Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel among their ranks, whereas the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy as their sole representatives from these teams. The Mumbai Indians (MI) boast Jasprit Bumrah as their lone participant, while the Punjab Kings (PBKS) are represented only by left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, who recently received his first Test call-up.

Significantly, Abhimanyu Easwaran is the sole player not affiliated with the IPL.

This analysis highlights a change in the approach to team building after the departures of key players. Following the exits of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ashwin, selectors have turned towards talents from domestic leagues and the Indian Premier League. Many of these new additions lack extensive experience in Test cricket but have demonstrated impressive abilities in limited-overs matches.
